SAU Music and Drama bring winter cheer with Alcott's "Little Women"

This winter, the Spring Arbor University Music Department and Drama Program will stage the musical version of “Little Women”, based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott, as a joint production. Evening shows will run Friday and Saturday, Feb. 15 and 16, at 8 p.m., with a matinee show running Sunday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m.

The cast, orchestra and crew are made up of students who have been involved with music and drama courses and activities at SAU’s Spring Arbor campus. Dr. Natalie Emptage Downs will serve as the Vocal Director, while SAU’s Director of Instrumental Music, Dr. Mark Douglass, will serve as the production’s Music Director and Producer. Associate Professor of Communication and Media Jen Letherer will direct.

Students have collaborated over the course of the interim January term and through the beginning of the spring semester to bring this production to life. “Little Women” tells the story of Jo March and her sisters Meg, Beth and Amy as they grow from girls to young women, facing trials both big and small.

Through their adventures with the boy next door, Laurie, his stern grandfather, Mr. Lawrence, their rich Aunt March, the handsome Mr. Brook and their always-loving Marmee, the girls know they can depend on each other. Jo’s writing and her relationship with Prof. Bhaer provide the bookends to the ever-charming tale of “Little Women”.
