SAU Hosts 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Service Day Project

On Monday, Jan. 15, SAU will host the 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Service Day Project, a countywide community service project organized by SAU’s Office of Intercultural Relations (OIR). Intended to assemble over 500 volunteers, the Legacy Service Day Project will be the largest organized single-day community service project in Jackson County. This event will include the involvement of local nonprofits, businesses and service clubs.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. (doors open at 9:30 a.m.) with a community rally in downtown Jackson’s historic Michigan Theatre (124 N Mechanic St.). Volunteers will receive free donuts, coffee and sponsorship T-shirts. To volunteer, show up to receive an assignment! Alternately, contact Eric Beda at eric.beda@arbor.edu.

Dr. King challenges us by asking an illuminating question that causes us to pause and take an introspective look at our personal contributions to our communities: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”

This project is an opportunity for the entire community to ‘join hands’ and address needs within Jackson County together. It is a day of reflection, renewal and pride.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is observed each year on the third Monday of January, which is close to Dr. King’s birthday, January 15. Many establishments are closed on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; let’s make this holiday a “DAY ON, not a DAY OFF.”

Over 50 organizations are committed to the 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Service Day Project, including SAU, Consumers Energy, Michigan Theatre, Baker College, Jackson College, Habitat for Humanity, Disability Connection and the City of Jackson.
