SAU Celebrates Black History Month

A message from Eric Beda, director of the Office of Intercultural Relations at SAU:

I want to invite you all to join me in celebrating Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month. It is observed in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom (October) to recognize the history and contributions of those of African descent.

Black History Month is important to me, because it’s about hearing the stories of a people who have been silenced for many years. It’s a time to reflect on the historical journey of black Americans, across the Atlantic Ocean, to the shores of the New World and into the White House. It’s a time to recognize the contributions of black Americans that have made the U.S. such a great and advanced nation. These contributions are intricately and seamlessly woven into the fabric of our nation, in fashion, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, sports and many other areas.

SAU will be celebrating Black History Month through the following events.
Black History Month Kick-off Event — Feb. 5
Poling Lobby, 6:30 p.m.

As Christians, we find our first community in God’s kingdom. Yet, even within a community rooted in faith, personal identity and heritage have their place. We look forward to the time when African American heritage is part of one continuous celebration that honors the melting pot society that makes America such a unique and great nation.
