Italy (Greater Naples Area) May 2025

COR 375 Tom Holsinger Friesen

$2.200 student cost*

*Cost with the CCS Subsidy. The $200 nonrefundable application fee is not included in this amount. The CCS Subsidy applies to 1st CCS program only. On this Cross-Cultural trip, you will experience the vibrant, bold culture of southern Italy (just like its food!). You will see the glory of ancient, Christian, and modern Rome (the “Eternal City”), explore the gorgeous geography of Campania and the Amalfi coast (from island fishing villages to the bustling metropolis of Naples), and discover how Italians today continue to live “la dolce vita” (the sweet life) in a family and community culture full of zest.

Learning-intensive activities may include:

Education

Visit a local preschool and elementary school to learn about education in Italy. Interact with college students and faculty at the University of Naples.

Family

Italian families are close-knit. Learn how they draw on their rich traditions to adjust to social and economic changes in our modern world. We will have great conversations with local folks in the community (probably over Neapolitan pizza).

Government

Meet with government officials in the Italian region of Campania (including the mayor of the hilltop town of Monte di Procida). Speak with individuals who are working with refugees and hear about the challenges and opportunities migration brings to this part of Europe.

Economics

Visit local farms and learn about the production and marketing of agricultural products such as buffalo mozzarella and olive oil.

Religion

Visit the archaeological site where the Apostle Paul arrived in Italy and the underground prison where he and the Apostle Peter were held. Step inside St. Peter’s Basilica – the center of western Christendom – and see Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling with your own eyes. Learn about how Christianity transformed ancient Roman religion and culture and bring your questions about contemporary religious issues.
